Professional Counseling Services for Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are mental health conditions that are marked by an obsession with food, body shape, or a combination of the two. While they can impact anyone, eating disorders are most common among young women. Some of the most common eating disorders include:

Anorexia nervosa — avoids eating certain types of foods, severely restricts calories, constantly monitors weight, and views themselves as overweight even if they’re dangerously underweight.
Bulimia Nervosa — eating unusually large amounts of food in a relatively short period of time followed by purging.
Binge Eating Disorder —  eating large amounts of food in secret in relatively short periods of time despite not being hungry. No purging is involved.
Pica — eating things not considered food like dirt, chalk, soap, hair, and more.
Rumination Disorder — voluntary regurgitation of food that has been previously chewed and swallowed in order to re-chew food and then either re-swallow it or spit it out.
Avoidant or Restrictive Food Intake Disorder — disturbed eating due to lack of interest in eating or distaste for certain smells, tastes, colors, textures, or temperatures.

Eating disorders can be caused by a number of issues, which is why it’s important to seek professional treatment. Simply telling someone to eat in a healthier manner will not address the underlying issues. Please contact the licensed therapists at South Coast Community Services for professional treatment today.
