Diagnosed
Diagnosing ADHD is a crucial step in accessing appropriate support and interventions. The diagnosis of ADHD involves a comprehensive evaluation process that takes into account various factors, including medical history, behavioral assessments, and input from teachers, parents, and other caregivers. This multidisciplinary approach ensures a thorough understanding of the youth or child's symptoms and their impact on daily functioning.
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)
The diagnosis of ADHD is primarily based on the criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). According to the DSM-5, individuals must exhibit persistent patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interfere with their functioning or development. These symptoms should be present in multiple settings, such as school, home, and social environments. In addition, the onset of symptoms must occur before the age of 12.

Three Types of ADHD
There are three subtypes of ADHD that can be diagnosed: predominantly inattentive presentation, predominantly hyperactive/impulsive presentation, or combined presentation (a combination of both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms). The subtype is determined based on the predominant symptoms exhibited by the individual.
