What An Eating Disorder Means

At South Coast Community Services, we know how difficult it can be for children experiencing eating disorders. As parents, it can be difficult to know what to do, and in today's post, we're exploring how eating disorders can affect your child's mind and body. Where to Begin

If you're concerned that your child might have developed an eating disorder, sometimes the best approach is to talk to them about it. If they are not yet making themselves throw up or restricting their intake, but you think they are in danger of developing a disorder, it's important to sit down with them and let them know how much you love and support them, but also stress the importance of seeking professional help if necessary. As parents, our instinct is often to try and solve the problem alone by talking with our kids about healthy eating patterns. Unfortunately this can backfire if your idea of a healthy eating pattern doesn't match up with your child's. By letting us guide both you and your children into recovery, we will work together as a team to break the cycle of an eating disorder.

Getting Your Child the Help They Deserve

If your child has already developed an eating disorder, there is no way to describe how difficult that can be as a parent. You want more than anything for them to recover and return to health, but they may not be willing or ready to hear it yet. In many instances, we recommend preparing yourself for this possibility before approaching your child about treatment options. If you’re not sure where to begin, we advise reaching out to us as soon as possible.
